2019.12.21 - 2020.01.19DREAMIN’ MoNTUE “ This is a Story from the Laundromat”: Suspense, Drama, and Romance

The story starts from 7:03pm to 7:50pm, 18th April, 2018. I was meat to await for a friend, and then walked into a laundromat, instead of doing the laundry. Because of it, I was being there as an observer watching people who were there for the laundry. Some of them carried a suitcase with full of clothing, messily threw the clothes into a washing machine; some were sitting at a corner with leisure, phubbing a mobile while waiting; the others just left the laundry without hesitation. At certain point, my sense of body with ambiguity summoned up myself to document the moment of what was happening in front of me by writing objectively as I could without any emotion or interpretation. Soon after, I read the texts of what I wrote, trying to recall what was I perceived in the laundromat. However, it turned out that the temperature, smell, color, sound or motion in the article seem to be intentionally arranged. It was unable to be distinguished whether the images flashing in my mind was from certain movie scene or a memory in reality. Through some kind of intuition, the brain seemed to reflexively fill in the gap that has been forgotten with no sense. The project is based on personal experience and accomplished step by step with a group of joint discussion. CHIA Chien-Ju invites four artists from different disciplinary including choreography, dance, sound and theater. Through their experience sharing and writing practice, they trigger their unique life experience to jointly fill in the missing plots of the “This is a Story from the Laundroma.” Apart from seeking their common perception, each of the participating artist extends new imaginary narratives from the initial documentary text. In the process of developing the exhibition, the artist digests the experience and imaginations provided from herself and the other artists, to collage the whole picture of the story. She applies the trace of time on site through videos, installation and sound to encounter with each other as joint narratives. Under the method of repetition and overlapping, it accumulates the experience that was indulged in certain memories. It tends to arise the intuition deeply buried in our body, to reconstruct the perception of reality, and further to achieve certain experience of memories shifting. The production of the exhibition space is under the concept of “walking into a movie to watch a movie.” Instead of text, the images generate the storyline; the storyline coincides the space into a scenario; the sound amplifies to emotion and atmosphere; and the dancer brings out the sense of body. By the time of the choreography of dancers and performers by the choreographer, the role design of the characters emerges. In the meanwhile, the installation of clothing and objects is referred as the props in a movie, bringing about the meaning of “This is a Story from the Laundromat.”

2019 Dreamin’ MoNTUE Since 2015, MoNTUE Museum of National Taipei University of Education has initiated the open call of “Dreamin’ MoNTUE” Project biennially to the world. By providing the resource, it aims to support the new generation for the energy of art practice. MoNTUE is regarded as the experimental platform for artists, breaking through the boundary between people, museum space and art practice. The objective is to trigger the interaction and dialogues among them, exploring the unknown of various disciplinaries. The second edition of “Dreamin’ MoNTUE” in 2019 will bring you to the scenes in a movie when you step into the museum, wandering among the plots and sequence. The multiple narratives with different time and space intertwines into a movie which opens a new chapter for the “Dreamin’ MoNTUE.”
